So I was starting to take a nap earlier and the phone rang. It was a so-and-so Coffman from the Republican Party saying something to the effect that the Democrats were taking over and that could be doom for us all. She said this with such urgency that one would think a Democratic was the equivalent of an Extraterrestrial.
Now I have gained an interest in politics in the past few years, but mainly because I think it is the politicians in general who are out to take over the world and destroy the working class folks. When election time comes around, it is all a big party amongst the parties, and it really pisses me off. I think it is long overdue for our nation to disregard the "party" titles all together. Sure, it worked during the eras of George and Abe and all the Big Whigs (ha), but it has only created havoc in today's Capitol. Personally, I don't give a damn whether they're Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or whatever. The fact is, it must come down to the ideas presented. Unfortunately, some close-minded (mainly elderly) people don't seem to think so.
I want our next president to be someone who has little to no experience in politics. Those with experience just know how the work the system and screw the people a little harder.
So I allowed Ms. Coffman to go through her little schpiel (hey, its their phone bill, not mine) and she eventually got to the brass tacks: "So would you be willing to make a donation of at least $100 to help out the Republican Party and support President Bush?" And I said, "Um, nope." So she starts again with, "Now, I know that can seem like a lot of money..."
And I snapped. I cut her off, midsentence and told her that it isn't the amount of money, it is the fact I DO NOT support political parties and I certainly DO NOT support our President right now. But in retrospect, hell yeah it's a lot of money. As far as I'm concerned, $5 is too much to support such a wasted cause. In fact, here are 10 ways I would be more likely to put a spare $100 to use (no particular order of importance):
1. Get groceries. It's been a couple months since I could really stockpile.
2. Buy 100 lottery tickets.
3. Put it in the offering on Sunday.
4. Fill up all of our vehicles with gas. That might actually be over $100, but it would be a good start.
5. Feed some stray animals and/or donate to the local humane society.
6. Pay back my son's piggy bank.
7. Buy license plates for at least one of the cars since we're now, oh, 3 months overdue.
8. Donate to my neighbors who have a $500 + electric bill and will be getting it turned off if not paid by this weekend.
9. Buy same neighbors' kid a bicycle.
10. Get some new shoes! (Duh, I'm a woman. Like that wouldn't be on my list!)
Maybe when we're not shelling out our hard earned money for this damn pointless war we can afford to support others than ourselves.
